Come Along Copenhagen

Along the way on our four hour drive from Mullsjo to Copenhagen, Denmark, we were greeted with a channel of water we had to cross in order to continue en route. The fastest way across? The ferry! Our driver drove onto the massive vessel and we were allowed to leave the car to explore the ship. It was huge, with a cafe, restrooms, and lots of indoor and outdoor seating. After standing at the bow for nearly the entire trip, my hair had never been more windswept.

The first night in Copenhagen was spent settling into our hotel rooms and winding down with some sushi and pigeon watching (and feeding). We arrived pretty late in the afternoon and most of the museums on our list were beginning to close down for the night, so we decided to call it a day and get up early Saturday morning to explore the city.

The National Gallery of Denmark was our first stop, with Nordic and French paintings from the Baroque and Renaissance periods lining the walls of their permanent collections. This museum held a majority of Rembrandt's work as well, and it was amazing to see some of his pieces in person. They also displayed contemporary work which included painting, sculpture, and video. Of the more modern work, Retired Allfather by Oscar Yarn and The Swimmers by Christian Lemmerz were some of my personal favorites.

Our next stop was the Danish Design Museum which held a large collection of present-day design work. Bottles of liquified emotions, vibrantly lit interiors, and fluorescent sculptures are just the tip of the iceberg with this place. Every room left a different impression on me and inspired me in unusual ways. I can say with confidence that this was one of the most unique galleries I have ever visited, and I wish I had more than a few hours to traverse the grounds.

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art was our last stop of the day, and held a very specific brand of art. There were only a few current exhibitions on display, but we were still able to get our daily dose of fine art as we scouted out the grounds. They had a beautiful sculpture park outside where guests could be found lying on the hills above the ocean, and they exhibited a permanent collection for Andy Warhol.

After visiting so many places in such a small amount of time, I'd say I'm pretty good at speed-running museums at this point.

We are only as good as our imaginations,

Eli Goodwin
