Kunsthalle
Miraculous artwork awaited us at the Hamburg Kuntshalle this morning when we ventured in! Both sculpture work and paintings alike were purposefully placed within the halls and along the walls for us to peruse at our leisure.
One of the first paintings we walked into was The Entrance of Emperor Charles V in Antwerp by Hans Makart which dwarfed all of us at 520cm in height and 952 centimeters in length; a downright massive piece!
It felt amazing to be in the presence of so many historic artworks by famous painters like Edward Munch, Francois Lemoyne, and Caspar David Friedrich. While they didn't have my favorite Friedrich painting on display, Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, many more of his paintings were present and I thoroughly enjoyed taking the time to appreciate each one of them.
Of course, it wasn't just the oldies we were looking forward to seeing! Numerous contemporary art installations created by more modern artists were also present. Entire rooms were dedicated to current affairs and twenty-first century ideations.
Not all of it was pleasant to endure, but it was meant to be unsettling and evoke feelings of abhorrence. The photograph below is of one such installation that references the sexualization of minors in the present day through a combination of sculpture, video, and audio. The writing on the wall reads, "A nine-year old prostitute sings children's songs" surrounded by blank white walls and a black tiled floor.
Other rooms were dedicated to youthful rebellion that took place in Nazi Germany, complete with neon pink lighting, flickering fairy lights, and live palm trees that gave off an air of escapism.
The adjacent room displayed rows of pedestaled burn marks upon the walls with freshly chopped wood near the center. Photographs of book covers that were banned under the Nazi regime adorned the wall directly across from it.
We ambled around Hamburg for a bit afterwards, trying our first bites of German Chinese food, which was absolutely delicious. The portions were huge, especially the soup, and the bowl was bigger than my face! Nat ordered a desert Bao and let us all try some; it smelled and tasted like heaven in a bun 😋
